History
Dick Voneugen has been a driving force in the community of Prince George in many ways including being a founding member of the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Society and The Prince George Roadrunners. He organized the first Terry Fox run and is a founding director of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society. Dick has been involved in organizing and helping in many, many other events. He is always out cheering and helping people participate.
A long held tradition by Dick was to run the kilometers of his age with a group of friends on his birthday. The location alternated between Mt Robson and The Cranbrook Hill Greenway. After running 60 km’s on his 60th birthday, Dick starting reducing the run length at one kilometer per year. His last birthday run was 48 km long at the age of 72.
In the fall of 2011, a group of us asked Dick if we could continue this tradition for him. Dick agreed and we were excited at the prospect. Only one question remained. How far would we be running?
As it turned out, Dick was turning 80 in 2012. On June 10, 2012 revived his tradition and we celebrated this event by completing a multi-distance, trail fun run in Prince George. We ran a collective 1300 km’s.
The event followed trails through the Prince George area. Dick, as always, volunteered his time to provide a mobile aid station following the course.
